Hunting Licences & Permits

In order to hunt in Manitoba, having a valid licence for the species you want to hunt is a must. Hunting licences are required for all big game animals and most game bird hunting. While hunting, you must carry your Hunter Education Certificate, the licence, and any associated game tags.

1. Non-Resident Hunters

Anyone who is not a Manitoba resident but is a Canadian citizen is considered a non-resident hunter.

When hunting caribou, non-resident hunters must:

• Their hunt must be booked through a registered outfitter or lodge which is authorized to outfit non-resident caribou hunters.

• Those hunters must be accompanied by a licensed Manitoba guide, with a maximum of 3 hunters per guide at the same time.

• They can only use the outfitter’s services specified on their hunting licences.

Notice that: when hunting white-tailed deer, black bear, moose, coyote, wolf, game bird or migratory game bird, a non-resident hunter is not required to book his hunt through a licensed outfitter.

2. Foreign Resident Hunters

Anyone who is neither a resident of Manitoba nor a Canadian citizen is considered a foreign resident hunter.

When it comes to hunting black bear, moose, white-tailed deer, wolf, caribou, and coyote, foreign resident hunters must:

• Their hunt must be booked through a registered outfitter or lodge which is authorized to outfit foreign resident hunters.

• Those hunters must be accompanied by a licensed Manitoba guide, with a maximum of 3 hunters per guide at the same time.

• They can only use the outfitter’s services specified on their hunting licences.

Notice that: when it comes to game bird or migratory game bird hunting, foreign resident hunters are not required to book their hunt through a licensed outfitter.

Hunting Zones, Dates & Species

Manitoba’s southern part is grasslands, flat plains and plateaus. In this area, there are abundant cattle ranches and agricultural grain fields.

While the province’s central part, which is considered to be north Manitoba, is a flat forest surrounding Lake Winnipeg. When it comes to big game hunting, this area is mostly the prime one. Although it is a remote area, it is still a great home for wolves and black bears.

Black Bear Hunting

Hunting black bears is popular in areas of the Northern, Western, Parkland, Interlake and Eastern Region. Depending on the Game Hunting Area (GHA), the dates of the hunting season are primarily during the months of April through June and August through October.

Caribou Hunting

Caribou hunting is exclusive to the remote areas of the Northern Region. Depending on the Game Hunting Area (GHA) and the subspecies, the dates of the hunting season are primarily during the months of September through October and November through February.

Waterfowl Hunting

1. Geese Hunting

Goose hunting is very popular in the areas of the Parkland, Interlake, Northern, Western, Central Plains Pembina, and Eastern Region.

Depending on the Hunting area, the dates of the goose hunting season are primarily during the months of September through November, with the exception of the spring Conservation season for white geese, which is from March through June.

2. Duck Hunting

Duck hunting is also popular in areas of the Parkland, Interlake, Northern, Western, Central Plains Pembina, and Eastern Region. Depending on the hunting zone, the dates of the hunting season are primarily during the duration of September through November.

3. Sandhill Cranes

Sandhill Crane hunting season is during the period of September through November. Hunting those game birds is popular in areas of the Parkland, Northern and Western Region.

Whitetail Deer Hunting

Depending on the Game Hunting Area (GHA), the dates of the Whitetail hunting season are primarily during the period of September through December. Hunting those big game animals is very popular in areas of the Interlake, Western, Central Plains Pembina, Parkland, and Eastern Region.

Moose Hunting

Depending on the Hunting Area, Moose hunting season is primarily during the months of September, October and December. Hunting those big game animals is very popular in areas of the Northern, Western, Interlake, Parkland and Eastern Region.

Predators

1. Coyote Hunting

Coyote hunting is popular in regions of the Western, Central Plains Pembina, Parkland, Interlake and Eastern Region. The dates of the Coyote hunting season are during the period of August through February.

2. Wolf Hunting

Wolf hunting season dates are during the period of August through March. Hunting those animals is popular in areas of the Northern, Interlake, Parkland, and Eastern Region.

Hunting Game Birds

1. Wild Turkey

Hunting wild turkey is popular in areas of the Central Plains Pembina, Western, and Eastern Region. The dates of the hunting season are during April, May and October.

2. Partridge

Partridge hunting season is during the period of September through December. Areas of the Central Plains Pembina and Western Region are very popular for Partridge hunting.

3. Grouse

Areas of the Northern, Interlake, Parkland, Western, Central Plains Pembina and Eastern Region are very popular for Grouse hunting. The dates of the hunting season are during the period of September through December.

4. Ptarmigan

Ptarmigan hunting season is during the period of September through February. Hunting those game birds is exclusive to areas in the Northern Region.

Elk Hunting

Elk hunting is popular in areas of the Interlake, Parkland, and Western Region. Depending on the game hunting area, the hunting season is primarily during the period of September through January.

Notice that: Hunting opportunities for elk are only available to Manitoba Residents and are offered by draw.

Transportation of Wild Game

Make sure to bring appropriate containers in order to transport your game home. Whether you are driving or flying, this will make the transportation of your game home easier. It is always useful having a handy hunting trip planner.

You will fill out a form from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that you can obtain from the border crossing.

In order to export your wild game, you just need your hunting license from Manitoba along with the USDA form. If you are hunting with an outfitter, they can have your wild game quartered and wrapped prior to your departure home. [11]
